I've been using both for 6 months and come to this conclusion. While Last.fm seems to have more music in it's database and is better at recommending unknown music that you'll actually like, the buffering times can be extremely annoying depending on your network connection. Even when connected to wifi, it often has to re-buffer mid song. Contrast Pandora which seems barely to pause when you first load it and then plays continuously through any connection with the exception of the EDGE network on occasion... and you see why I still have both on my phone.

I think the UI and overall usability of the Pandora app is better then last.fm, and it has been giving me better performance on edge as well. Your right though for social networking features, Pandora is not the way to go, definitely Last.Fm wins out there. The playlists Pandora created for me are awesome. And for me, Pandora is the best.

Nice post. I agree that Pandora's recommendations are better, and that's a good insight about building stations around just one or two artists or songs. Just last week I found this site: http://pandorafm.real-ity.com/ which integrates Pandora and last.fm. The only feature I really care about is that is scrobbles what you listen to on Pandora to last.fm, but it's kinda neat that you can also use the last.fm tagging and rating from the interface.
