{"id":411,"date":"2008-11-03T02:25:05","date_gmt":"2008-11-03T07:25:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/?p=411"},"modified":"2008-11-03T02:25:05","modified_gmt":"2008-11-03T07:25:05","slug":"map-app-of-the-day-presidential-election-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2008\/map-app-of-the-day-presidential-election-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"Map App of the Day: Presidential Election Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s just two days until the U.S. Presidential election.\u00a0 I thought I&#8217;d talk a bit about how elections are covered with information graphics, specifically maps.<\/p>\n<p>To get things started, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2008\/POLITICS\/10\/27\/early.voting.map\/index.html?eref=rss_latest\">CNN has has a map of early voting participation numbers<\/a>.\u00a0 For some states, they even have participation by party and by county.\u00a0 This particular map is disappointing &#8211; no real effort is made to illustrate the information, all the real data is just text in callout boxes.\u00a0 It might even be more efficient just to put the data in a <a href=\"http:\/\/elections.gmu.edu\/early_vote_2008.html\">big table like this page at George Mason University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium\" title=\"cnn-early-vote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/photos\/photo\/2998856432\/cnn-early-vote.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3145\/2998856432_910df6fdbf.jpg\" alt=\"cnn-early-vote\" width=\"500\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/maps\/obama_vs_mccain\/\">Real Clear Politics&#8217; mapping application<\/a> is interesting because it gives you to ability to run your own scenarios, switching swing states back and forth to see the result. You can also compare results from previous elections, all the way back to 1968.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium\" title=\"real-clear-politics-map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/photos\/photo\/2998856474\/real-clear-politics-map.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3001\/2998856474_7b07b4336f.jpg\" alt=\"real-clear-politics-map\" width=\"452\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But geographic projections don&#8217;t tell the whole story &#8211;\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalirony.com\/2008\/11\/02\/why-the-electoral-college-sucks-graphically\/\">Political Irony has a great map<\/a> demonstrating exactly why the Electoral College is a terribly undemocratic way to choose a president &#8211; voters in some states have effectively four times the influence of voters in others:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2008\/11\/02\/opinion\/02chart_large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"The electoral college sucks.\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2008\/11\/02\/opinion\/02chart_large.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not the first person to notice this of course, so there have been many efforts to show cartograms based on electoral pull.\u00a0 There&#8217;s one at <a href=\"http:\/\/displib.blogspot.com\/2008\/08\/electoral-college-cartograms-update.html\">the Dispassionate Liberal <\/a>and one at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reachm.com\/amstreet\/archives\/2008\/08\/11\/electoral-college-cartograms-r-us\/\">American Street<\/a>, both using data from Pollster.com.<\/p>\n<p>I like the analysis at <a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\">FiveThirtyEight.com<\/a> a little better, so I&#8217;ll show <a href=\"http:\/\/frontloading.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/fhq-vs-talking-heads.html\">the latest cartogram from Frontloading HQ<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_4u9lzZ9sqJk\/SQ3x1jr8SUI\/AAAAAAAAAv8\/PC4nV6iDyHg\/s1600-h\/electoral.college.map.110208.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"electoral college cartogram map\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_4u9lzZ9sqJk\/SQ3x1jr8SUI\/AAAAAAAAAv8\/PC4nV6iDyHg\/s400\/electoral.college.map.110208.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"309\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This map tries to keep the states in the right shapes, if they&#8217;re a bit disconnected.\u00a0 Taking a cue from <a href=\"http:\/\/www-personal.umich.edu\/~mejn\/election\/\">Michael Gastner, Cosma Shalizi, and Mark Newman at the University of Michigan<\/a>, here&#8217;s a cartogram using the current data from FiveThirtyEight:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Original\" title=\"fivethrityeight election polling cartogram\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/photos\/photo\/2998016737\/fivethrityeight-cartogram.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3250\/2998016737_f6e2aaf948_o.png\" alt=\"fivethrityeight election polling cartogram\" width=\"460\" height=\"303\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A couple of notes &#8211; Blue is safe for Obama, Red is safe for McCain.\u00a0 I compressed &#8220;leans&#8221; and &#8220;likely&#8221; categories into one color because it&#8217;s late and my eyes are tired.\u00a0 Also, I&#8217;m missing Alaska and Hawaii, I&#8217;ll try to find a base map that has them and update.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geog.ucsb.edu\/~sara\/html\/mapping\/election\/election04\/election.html\">here&#8217;s another page with interesting maps<\/a> of 2004 election results analyzed in a number of interesting ways.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still on the lookout for the best map to watch election results as they come in on Tuesday &#8211; any suggestions?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s just two days until the U.S. Presidential election.\u00a0 I thought I&#8217;d talk a bit about how elections are covered with information graphics, specifically maps.
