{"id":454,"date":"2008-12-02T23:13:55","date_gmt":"2008-12-03T04:13:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/?p=454"},"modified":"2008-12-02T23:13:55","modified_gmt":"2008-12-03T04:13:55","slug":"i-love-hospitals-with-wifi-or-twittering-childbirth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2008\/i-love-hospitals-with-wifi-or-twittering-childbirth\/","title":{"rendered":"I Love Hospitals With WiFi, or Twittering Childbirth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When we were looking for hospitals and doctors offices for little Athena, wifi wasn&#8217;t really on the list so much as reputation, compatibility with our insurance, and other concerns.\u00a0 In retrospect, though, thank goodness Stanford Hospital and Palo Alto Medical Foundation have wifi.<\/p>\n<p>We live more than 2,000 miles from most of our family.\u00a0 Not all of them could make the flight to California for the birth.\u00a0 We also have too many friends around the country to possibly make all the phone calls we&#8217;d have liked to have made that night.\u00a0 In addition, we had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2008\/internet-baby-naming-update\/\">several thousand people all over the world<\/a> wondering which name we would pick for our baby.<\/p>\n<p>Because of internet connectivity, I was able to do a fair job of including all of them in the process:<\/p>\n<p>1) With my iPhone, I was able to <strong>take and post photos during labor and delivery<\/strong>.\u00a0 Photos of my mom&#8217;s new granddaughter were available for her, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jason-morrison\/sets\/72157609919552368\/\">on Flickr<\/a>, within minutes of birth:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium\" title=\"Wrapped and swaddled\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/photos\/photo\/3055596906\/wrapped-and-swaddled.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3029\/3055596906_11bea09017.jpg\" alt=\"Wrapped and swaddled\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure I can properly express here how much it meant to her and the rest of our family to be able to see Athena so quickly.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0 Using the Twitterific App on my iPhone was was able to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/iamjason\">post updates to Twitter<\/a> throughout the whole labor<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is a perfect example of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2008\/why-use-twitter\/\">what Twitter is good for<\/a>.\u00a0 Liveblogging while my wife endures the pains of childbirth would be ridiculously insensitive, but there were always minutes of downtime here and there to tap out a few words describing what&#8217;s going on.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium\" title=\"live-twittering\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/photos\/photo\/3078385825\/live-twittering.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3157\/3078385825_7830c2b90a.jpg\" alt=\"live-twittering\" width=\"500\" height=\"453\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0 Using the Twitter App for Facebook, <strong>my updates showed up on my Facebook status as well<\/strong>.\u00a0 This was a big help, since so many more friends and family use Facebook than Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth option, which we didn&#8217;t use but might have had the labor been longer, was <strong>videoconferencing with Skype<\/strong>.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve been using Skype to keep in touch with family for some time.\u00a0 It is currently my grandmother&#8217;s favorite thing to do.\u00a0 Since we&#8217;ve been back home Athena has become the star of many family video sessions.<\/p>\n<p>One final thing I have to mention is YouTube &#8211; we certainly weren&#8217;t going to share the gooey miracle of life with the world in streaming video, but my wife followed the videos fo several other women during pregancy up to and including labor.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t know a lot of other couples having kids right now, so that gave Ann a personal connection with their stories and helped her through some of the tougher times during the last 9 months.\u00a0 She could see that other people were going through the same things she was and that was an important comfort.<\/p>\n<p>The common theme here, which I think goes a long way toward explaining the growth of the internet as a whole, is communication.\u00a0 Because of almost universal connectivity, we were able to turn a deep personal experience into a social experience as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we were looking for hospitals and doctors offices for little Athena, wifi wasn&#8217;t really on the list so much as reputation, compatibility with our insurance, and other concerns.\u00a0 In retrospect, though, thank goodness Stanford Hospital and Palo Alto Medical Foundation have wifi.
