{"id":497,"date":"2009-02-16T16:14:36","date_gmt":"2009-02-16T21:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/?p=497"},"modified":"2009-02-16T16:14:36","modified_gmt":"2009-02-16T21:14:36","slug":"map-apps-of-the-day-islands-of-music-and-the-continental-zodiac","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2009\/map-apps-of-the-day-islands-of-music-and-the-continental-zodiac\/","title":{"rendered":"Map Apps of the Day: Islands of Music and the Continental Zodiac"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two interesting uses of maps today, one is a completely non-geographical map that illustrtaes data while the other is a completely artistic use of geography.<\/p>\n<h3>Islands of Music<\/h3>\n<p>Last.fm is\u00a0 a great service &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2008\/radio20-lastfm-will-pay-royalties-to-independent-musicians\/\">I&#8217;ve written about it before<\/a>.\u00a0 The best thing about it is the copious and collection of interesting data on music tastes (you can even see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/2009\/how-geeky-is-your-taste-in-music\/\">how geeky your taste in music is<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Like many other web sites Last.fm has a tagging system, and so it interesting to see how different tags relate to each other &#8211; are hip-hop fans more likely to listen to ambient or heavy metal?\u00a0 One very cool way to do this <a href=\"http:\/\/playground.last.fm\/iom\">is with a map<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-498\" title=\"islands of music from last.fm\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/islands_of_music.png\" alt=\"islands of music from last.fm\" width=\"477\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/islands_of_music.png 682w, http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/islands_of_music-300x141.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"http:\/\/playground.last.fm\/iom\">orginal version here<\/a>, complete with mouseover descriptions of the different islands.\u00a0 Visualizing music tatses as a map makes some interesting findings pop out &#8211; the long continent of folk, psychadelic, and metal in the northeast, for example.\u00a0 Deathcore and emo are on the same continent, just on opposite sides of what I call You-Don&#8217;t-Understand-Me-Dad Bay.<\/p>\n<p>This is an alternative to more conventional tag cloud or word cloud representations, though I&#8217;m not sure which presents information more clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing that strikes me is the similarity to video game maps &#8211; perhaps because of the iconic color palate.\u00a0 Though we might think of them geographically, video game maps are equally artificial ways to relate to a big pile of numerical data.<\/p>\n<h3>World maps as Chinese zodiac<\/h3>\n<p>Artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graflexdirections.com\/\">Kentaro Nagai<\/a> has used the continents (and major islands) as a medium to create the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinktentacle.com\/2009\/02\/twelve-animals-world-maps-as-chinese-zodiac\/\">See all of them here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I particularly like the economy of arrangement in the rooster:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-499\" title=\"Rooster from Chinese zodiac\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/eto_10.jpg\" alt=\"Rooster from Chinese zodiac\" width=\"468\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/eto_10.jpg 468w, http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/eto_10-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and the sheep for it&#8217;s nice use of negative space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-501\" title=\"The sheep from the Chinese zodiac\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/eto_8.jpg\" alt=\"The sheep from the Chinese zodiac\" width=\"468\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/eto_8.jpg 468w, http:\/\/www.jasonmorrison.net\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/eto_8-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.christopherworrall.com\/\">Chris<\/a> for the link to the Zodiac<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two interesting uses of maps today, one is a completely non-geographical map that illustrtaes data while the other is a completely artistic use of geography.
